Methodology · The Full Case

Why a birth moment can say anything at all.

We separate what is checkable from what is traditional — and we built the product so that the traditional parts have to earn their keep against your own evidence.

Verified math — astronomy & calendars Traditional lens — typology & mapping Your evidence — the self-correcting layer
§1 · Verified Math

What we actually compute from your birth moment

Everything in this section is ordinary astronomy and calendar arithmetic. You can check any of it against a published ephemeris.

Verified math

Your birth date, time and place define one thing precisely: where the sun actually was at the moment you were born. Three corrections stand between your birth certificate and that fact:

1 · Longitude correction. Clock time is standardized per zone, but the sun crosses the sky continuously. Every degree of longitude east or west of the zone meridian shifts local solar time by 4 minutes.

2 · The equation of time. Earth's orbit is elliptical and tilted, so sundial time runs up to ±16 minutes ahead or behind clock time through the year. We apply the full correction.

3 · Historical daylight saving. The DST rules of the year and place you were born — including oddities like the 1974 US year-round DST — are applied from the IANA time zone database.

The corrected moment is then projected onto the traditional sexagenary calendar: year pillar anchored at the actual moment of 立春 (not January 1), month pillars switching at the astronomical solar terms, day pillars carried by Julian Day Number arithmetic, hour pillars by the five-rats rule. The solar terms themselves come from a truncated VSOP87 planetary theory (Bretagnon & Francou), iterated with nutation and aberration — accurate to about ±15 seconds.

Why this matters for trust The same clock time in San Francisco and Shanghai yields different pillars — and ours handles it correctly, including historical DST. It's checkable, and we invite you to check it.
§2 · Traditional Lens

Five phases: a typology, not a destiny.

What the pillars mean for your body is the traditional layer — and we label it as such.

Traditional lens

Chinese medicine organizes physiology into five phase-clusters — Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water (木火土金水) — each covering an organ pair, an emotional register, a tissue, a season. Your chart's phase distribution is read as a constitutional archetype: which clusters run generous, which run thin.

This is a typology — the same family of tools as Ayurveda's three doshas or Hippocrates' four humors. A typology is not a measurement and it is not causation. Its value is narrower and practical: it compresses infinite individual variation into a handful of patterns, so it can decide which questions to ask first and which gentle corrections to try first.

We don't ask you to believe the chart. We ask the chart to survive your own testimony.

In this product, the archetype only ever acts as a hypothesis generator. It proposes which of your five systems to probe — then Layer 3 asks you what you actually experience, and can overrule the proposal outright.

§3 · Modern Echoes

Resonances, not proof.

Two adjacent literatures make the framework less alien than it sounds. We present them as echoes — carefully short of endorsement.

Season-of-birth effects. Epidemiology has repeatedly found small but statistically detectable associations between birth month and later health outcomes — allergies, myopia, mood disorders, even lifespan. Proposed mechanisms include prenatal vitamin D exposure, maternal infection seasons, and early immune imprinting. The effects are weak and contested. But they establish the modest claim this product depends on: the timing of your beginnings carries some biological information. Nobody has shown that a BaZi chart captures that information — we claim only the weaker, honest version: it is not absurd on its face.

Circadian biology. The organ clock (子午流注) that structures your daily rhythm prescription has a real-world cousin: cortisol peaks shortly after waking, liver metabolism and body temperature follow endogenous ~24-hour programs, and meal timing measurably shifts metabolic health. The two-hour traditional windows are not laboratory science — but "when you do things matters" absolutely is.

Our stance Where modern science corroborates a practice, we say so. Where it is silent, we say that too. Silence is not disproof — but it is not evidence, and we won't pretend otherwise.
§4 · The Climate Layer

Five Movements, Six Qi — ancient medical meteorology.

The second layer of diagnosis is a 1,800-year-old model of climate periodicity, from the Suwen's seven great discourses on yun-qi.

五运 · The Five Movements

Each year is keyed by its heavenly stem to one dominant phase — the year's climatic keynote — in an excess (太过) or deficient (不及) register. A Water-excess year presses on the phases it controls; a Fire-deficient year leaves its own functions undernourished.

六气 · The Six Qi

The year divides into six steps of roughly 61 days, each carrying a host climate (主气) — fixed by season — overlaid by a guest climate (客气) that rotates by year. Two governorships (司天在上·在泉在下) split the year into halves. Together: a climate calendar, computed from the same astronomical solar terms as your chart.

What it was for — and what we use it for

Historically, yun-qi theory was applied to epidemic timing — which seasons would favor which illnesses. It is, in effect, traditional Chinese medicine's epidemiology. Its modern cousins are seasonal epidemiology and climate-health research.

In your reading, the climate layer answers one question: when. When does the seasonal climate press on your chart's thinnest phase — and when does it lend support. That becomes your risk calendar, and the seasonal adjustment of your prescription.

Worked example2026 · 丙午年 in our engine
MovementWater, excess (水运太过) — the year's keynote is cold-water pressure
GovernorsMinister Fire governs above (少阴君火司天), Dryness-Metal below (阳明燥金在泉)
ConsequenceExcess water controls fire — if your chart's thinnest phase is Fire (heart & circulation), 2026 leans on it; your calendar marks the pressing windows and your prescription adds support

The year as a climate wheel. Outer ring: the six seasonal steps from Great Cold (大寒), ~61 days each. In every step, the grey line is the host qi — the fixed climate of that season — and the colored line is the guest qi, which rotates year by year. The center holds the year's keynote, the yearly movement (岁运). Steps three and six carry the two half-year governorships, 司天 above and 在泉 below. The NOW marker is computed from your browser's current date — this figure is the same engine your report runs on.

§5 · Your Evidence

The self-correcting architecture

The strongest reason to trust this reading is not any single layer — it's that the layers check each other, and you hold the veto.

Your evidence

The final index is a weighted fusion, computed in the open:

final = 40% · birth-chart constitution  +  25% · season-adjusted risk  +  35% · your symptom evidence

Layer 3 draws its questions from your Layers 1–2 profile — the interview is different for every chart. Reverse-scored items catch inconsistent answering. And crucially, the symptom layer holds a veto: a chart-proposed "Priority" system with no symptom corroboration is demoted two grades. The traditional layers must earn their conclusions against your testimony, every time.

Every number in your report shows its arithmetic — 33.6 + 22.5 + 22.4 = 78 — with each layer's contribution visible, so you can disagree with the weights, not just the output.

A second chart, internally

Traditional lens

Before fusion, the engine also casts your birth moment in a second, independent chart tradition — Zi Wei Dou Shu (紫微斗数) — and reads only its health palace (疾厄宫), life palace (命宫) and spirit palace (福德宫): the branches they sit on and the five-phase nature of their stars, with transformed-Ji stars (化忌) weighted as flags. If that second reading points at the same top systems as your birth chart, the final index gains a small +2 confirmation; if the two traditions fully diverge, it yields −2. That is the full extent of its influence — deliberately small, always visible in the report's cross-check line, and never presented to you in Zi Wei language: your reading speaks BaZi, the second chart merely countersigns it. (Both systems share the same philosophical roots, so this is agreement between traditions, not scientific validation.)

§6 · Honest Limits

What this is not.

A tool that overclaims is a tool you should drop. Here is the line, plainly.

  • Not a medical diagnosis. No VitalQi output identifies disease, and none should guide treatment of one.
  • No labs, no imaging, no examination. We read a birth moment, a climate calendar and a symptom questionnaire — nothing that replaces a physician's eyes on you.
  • Not for emergencies. If something feels wrong now, close this tab and see a doctor.
  • The five phases are a language, not physics. They classify observations; they are not substances flowing in your blood.
  • The mechanisms are not modern-science-verified. Where research is silent, we told you in §3. The product's value is orientation and rhythm — attention pointed at the right window — not measurement.
  • 18+, wellness use only. The prescription layer adjusts itself down (still practice only) for pregnancy and major conditions — and tells you to keep your clinician in the loop.
§7 · Sources

Where this comes from

  • Huangdi Neijing · Suwen 《黄帝内经·素问》 — the seven yun-qi discourses (天元纪·五运行·六微旨·气交变·五常政·六元正纪·至真要), the classical source of Five Movements and Six Qi.
  • VSOP87 — Bretagnon & Francou, planetary theory of the Bureau des Longitudes; the truncated series behind our solar-term instants.
  • J. Meeus, Astronomical Algorithms — equation of time, nutation and solar coordinate methods used in the engine.
  • IANA Time Zone Database — historical DST and offset rules per place and year.
  • Season-of-birth epidemiology — a century of literature on birth-month associations (search: "season of birth effect"). Effects are small and mechanisms debated; we cite it as resonance, not proof.
  • iztro — open-source Zi Wei Dou Shu charting library (MIT), the engine behind the internal cross-check.
  • Circadian biology — chrononutrition and chronomedicine literature on meal timing, cortisol phase, and organ-level rhythms.
